CA State Bar Spring Educational Conference

April 23, 2016

Speaker: Bill Armstrong

Topic:    “Uber, Lyft and the Crowd-Sourced Worker”

It is a simple legal question with an extraordinarily complex legal answer: Do crowd-sourced workers, such as Uber or Lyft drivers, classify as employees or independent contractors? A recent spate of cases has highlighted the tricky issues in analyzing this question. Many scholars have proposed a new third class of worker to address the problem. This program will detail what issues to analyze when determining whether a crowd-sourced worker is an employee or independent contractor for purposes of workers’ compensation proceedings and the ramifications of each classification.
